Olga Comes Home / Sally's Comet

Until recently, few people were aware the 5-foot, 2-inch tall woman was one of Castro's most famous female prisoners. The desert scene during Helga's dream is based off of the Salvador Dali painting The Persistence of Memory. The piece Olga listens to while depressed is "Lacrimosa" from Mozart's Requiem in D Minor. Helga tells Arnold "catfish are jumpin' and the cotton is high", which is almost a line from the song "Summertime" from the opera Porgy and Bess. One of the photos of Olga in Miss Slovak's class is in front of P.S. It appears that Olga had something to do with its construction, as she appears to be standing in front of a drawing of it.

Miss Slovak happily announces that the "hard working, successful, and friendly" former pupil of P.S. This student is Olga Pataki, Helga's older sister. The latter is anything but pleased by her sister's visit, but Helga and Olga's parents hardly can wait for the arrival.

In "Spelling Bee", Bob tells Helga that when Olga was younger, she won the spelling bee because she spelled the word "qualm," remembering to include the nearly-silent letter "l". This motivates Helga in wanting to win the spelling bee until she finds out that her dad bribed Arnold, whereby she forfeits the contest. Also, when Big Bob shows Helga an old picture of Olga, she has unibrow just like her father and sister. However, an adult Olga is eyebrow-less like Miriam.

During dinner, Olga tells of the many prizes and awards she has gotten. She also mentions that there are two men who would like to date her. She says that one is in law school and that the other one is in medical school and that she can't decide which one she would like to date. After dinner, she plays her award-winning interpretation of a Brandenburg concerto. "Batista never cared about the farmers and poor people," says Olga, who was senior class president of Santa Clara teacher's college. The episode ends with Olga proposing that, tomorrow, just her and Helga should spend time together, which Helga accepts, acknowledging that it might be a nice experience.

The next day Helga is in the hallway when the mail arrives. It includes an envelope addressed to Olga from her college, which contains her grades. Helga quickly opens the letter and is disappointed to find out that Olga once again has gotten all A+'s. She decides then to change one of the grades to "B+". Later on during dinner, she gives Olga the letter. When Olga opens it, she reads off all of the A+'s to her family but at the very end of the list, she sees the "B+".

"You have been my love, my happiness, my companion in life and in my thoughts in my hour of death." Twelve years after her husband was executed, Olga was handed the letter that Morgan wrote to her in his final hours before walking to the firing squad. Eleven times, they waged hunger strikes at the women's prison in Guanajay and were confined to the troubled D section, Olga says.

When Helga's older sister, Olga, comes home from college and gets all of her parents' attention, Helga plots to sabotage her sister's visit. Arnold and Gerald save up cereal box tops to get a telescope before the arrival of Salley's Comet. The next day at school during the lunch break, Helga is in an extraordinarily good mood.

This causes her to break into tears and run upstairs into her bedroom, where she buries herself in her bed. Bob tries to distract her mind and buys a box of her favorite Swiss chocolates. Olga does not accept this, but Helga does enjoys them in her room. Bob also buys Olga a new Caprini model dress, but she does not want it, and so the dress also goes to Helga (even though it's too big for her). Even the tickets for a Broadway event, which Olga wanted to watch, she rejects. So, Helga goes to the show with Bob.

When Arnold asks for the reason, she tells him what she has done and how dejected Olga currently is. Arnold finds Helga's behavior pretty mean and tells her so, but she does not let it spoil her mood. When she comes home and sees that now Bob and Miriam became depressed too, she gets a little annoyed. When Helga wakes up, she goes to Olga and admits to what she did.

In this episode, Helga says Olga attends Bennington College, but when her report card arrives with the mail, it says Wellington College. However, there is a Bennington College within the U.S. located in the state of Vermont. Bennington College does not give out letter grades; they use a written evaluation. When Olga finally arrives, it soon becomes evident why Helga is not too thrilled. The parents, Bob and Miriam, are full of joy and excitement, while Helga is pouting in the corner and hoping that Olga will depart as soon as possible.

Upon hearing this revelation, Olga appears to be getting into a better mood. Helga then tells her to tell their parents what she did so that they can punish her and reward Olga--however, Olga admits that while she is tempted to tell their parents about what Helga did, she ultimately decides not to.
